A family court in Benin, Edo state, sentenced Mohammed Aliu, 28, to 10 years in prison on Thursday for defiling a 10-year-old girl.
The court’s chief magistrate, Ms. Adamaigbo Dorothy, sentenced the accused after pleading guilty to the charge.
Attorney General Mary Imhodemhe previously told the court that the accused had committed the crime on May 23 in the community of Evbukhu, a suburban city along the Sapele highway in the state.
According to Imhodemhe, the defendant threatened to stab the minor before illegally contaminating the ten-year-old girl.
“This crime violated section 218 of the penal code, Chapter 48, vol. II, of the late Bendel state in Nigeria 1976, as applicable in Edo,” he said.
However, the chief magistrate found the accused guilty and sentenced him to 10 years in prison on the basis of the conviction and evidence of the victim’s medical report.
