The Benue State Police Command said it killed seven suspected armed thieves who shot and killed a police officer on the Lafia-Makurdi highway.
SDR, Catherine Anene, public relations officer in charge (PPRO), revealed it in a statement to Makurdi on Friday, reports NAN.
Anene said the team of police officers tracked down criminals after a warning after they attacked and killed a police officer at a checkpoint on the Lafia-Makurdi highway.
“Following the news of the accident and the attack on a police checkpoint on 4/04/2020 on the Lafia-Makurdi road which led to the death of Inspector Boniface Odeh and the loss of an AK47 rifle, a team Police officers followed armed thieves terrorize travelers along the way.
“The team of police officers on arrival at the scene met with the criminals wearing military camouflages and police uniforms.
“Seven of the armed thieves suffered varying degrees of gunshot wounds after a duel with the police that lasted about 20 minutes.
“However, they were rushed to the Benue State University Educational Hospital, where they eventually died while their bodies were deposited in the morgue for an autopsy,” he said.
He also explained that the police recovered the missing AK47 rifle, another AK47 rifle loaded with 21 live ammunition, a locally produced two-shot pistol, two Danish pistols, four tactile lights, four machetes, nine cell phones and various pendants.
The PPRO also warned criminals to desist from their bad habits or face the wrath of the law.
“The command will ensure that there is no stone left unturned in the fight against crime,” he added.
